I had a thought this morning while driving down a county road lined with mail boxes. Do right hand drive countries use left hand drive cars to deliver mail? I did the google but it was not conclusive so I’m hoping our English and Aussi oppos can chime in.

Our posties are in and out of the van all the time, they don’t just drive along and feed it out the window.

GM made a mistake not offering the Pontiac Vibe as a postal jeep. The Vibe was already being made in RHD and sold in Japan as the Toyota Voltz (the Toyota-branded Matrix wasn’t sold in Japan).. They made RHD Saturn wagons. Subaru even made RHD Outbacks here
for postal use. So why no Postal Vibe?

No. Outside of the U.S., we get out of our vehicles. Lol.
No seriously. In the U.K. our houses have letter boxes on the front door of the house.
So everything is delivered by hand either from a trolley (some are electric assisted) (if delivering from a near by post office centre) t hat the Post person takes everywhere or stops at the end of each street and walk up one side of the street and then down the other.
Others are delivered by van with the Post person walking to the door or has a small trolley they can decant mail from the van into to take the weight and hand post to more addresses in one go.

Sure, urban delivery but I’m assuming you have rural areas in England too? my driveway is 250' long and there’s only a few houses on each road.

RHD vehicles are used for rural mail. There is a huge portion of the US that is rural, and if they were getting out of the car for every box it would increase the time for delivery and make it very inefficient .

I know, hence the, ‘Lol’.
As U.S. rural areas have federal post boxes for each house at the edge of the property on the roadside.

No, in answer to the question. Other than America I’ve never seen a post vehicle with the alternate setup as it were. Post is usually put in the door so there's no need. Post in towns and suburbs is delivered on foot or by bike.

In rural areas it’s done by van to each house, or some (rarely) have a post box outside the front gate, near the road.
Little known fact, if you are walking in the countryside, you can flag a post office vehicle down and get a lift (if it's on the route).

They are going to more “group boxes” where they will have 5-20 boxes lined up or in a prefabricated mail box with keyed doors for each compartment . This seem much more efficient and secure to me. We do have a problem with mail theft in some areas as most mai l boxes are not secured.

I know where I live in Canada, we have regular postal vans ding the major cities but far, far, far out in more remote areas I’ve seen RHD CR-Vs used in their postal offices .

It’s still delivered to the door. Don't know about the UK but here there was an outcry when the use of boxes near the road was suggested as nobody wanted to pay for them

I am in Canada too, and my mail used to arrive by RHD CRV! Since the pandemic though we seem to get a dedicated RHD postal van.

Not really an issue with stealing mail here as the Post person puts it directly into owners house, the issue here (like in many other countries) is disgruntled workers dumping post into waste tips, bins, etc...

Ye', here in the U.K. it's all done to the door, but a household can choose to buy a box to sit external from the property either closer to the road or outside the entry gates.

They’re definitely more efficient for delivery. More secure, well, some of them are. Many of the group boxes I’ve seen in the past were simple wood platforms with a row of the same mailboxes you’d buy for the end of your driveway because the post office just said they weren’t driving down that road anymore so move your box over here or get no mail .

nope. our guys and girls in cities rides e-bikes or Honda NBC110 “postie” bikes.
country delivery drivers use RHD cars and manage.
